Photonic Crystal Planar Optical Waveguides with Chigrin-type Omnidirectional Stacks

In this paper we propose a method to improve thewaveguides for optical communications based on 2-dimen-sional photonic crystals. To this purpose a standard channelwaveguide is sandwiched between two omnidirectionalChigrin-type 1D dielectric layer stacks. The combination oftotal internal reflection and photonic band gap reflectionenables improved confinement of optical signal along the z-axis, while retaining all the benefits of conventional 2Dcrystals. The structure can be fabricated utilizing standardplanar technology, i.e. photolithography or holographic litho-graphy and thin-film deposition.
